My name is Laurie Maltby, the Director at the Harrison Street Academy. I am proud to be a part of a cutting-edge preschool found right here in Leesburg, Virginia. As you begin to research schools you understandably will have lots of questions, many of which are about the educators.
I handpick each educator to fit our specific profile--loving, passionate, creative, and well-educated with a degree or certification. We make sure that your children are taught by the best with enthusiasm and tenacity to make sure they have a firm foundation on which to grow!
Here’s a little more about me: I have been involved in the education field for over 30 years--I love helping children learn, and am passionate about making a difference in each of my student’s lives! It gives me such joy to see their faces light up as they learn and discover new things.
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from LaSalle University. My experience spans a number of schools in several states in the US, and I had the amazing opportunity to teach in a school in Botswana, Africa for fourteen years. There I learned to mentor other teachers and work with all aspects of the business.
This age group, two and a half to five years old, is such an important time for learning and development! Building that foundation NOW is important! Knowing this, I’ve partnered to develop advanced classes for four year olds to be ready to LEAD their classes when they get into Kindergarten. My goal is to not only make sure that your children are excelling in academics, but also learn to have integrity, kindness, tenacity and self-control.
I love our Abeka Curriculum--it covers the foundations of early learning in a way that is easy to digest for little minds! There is plenty of play, singing, and movement incorporated. You'll hear little voices singing through the day at your house after this program. So fun! The S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) components we offer are a major source of excitement here at HSA! Our S.T.E.A.M. lab is a place of discovery and fascination. It’s an ever-changing, dynamic space that will be a memory maker for your children. From growing Hydroponic plants to a fish tank, to legos, building games, tablets, and Code-A Pillars, there are always new things to pique their interest.
I have been married to a wonderful man for the past 34 years. We have three fantastic children and three outstanding grandchildren. In my leisure time, I enjoy helping others in the community, playing the piano, vacationing, reading a good book and trips to Chick-fil-A with my kids and grandchildren.
I endeavor to make Harrison Street Academy an exciting and fun filled place that your children look forward to attending each day. With your partnership, their coming years here will be filled with lots of learning in a loving environment--their best years yet!
Love, Mrs. Maltby
Danette Cooper is our S.T.E.A.M. Coordinator here at Harrison Street Academy! She has 21 years experience teaching in private Christian preschool and is currently studying at NOVA to obtain her certificate in Early Childhood Education. Danette has been married for 19 years and has an 11 year old daughter. In her free time, she is a soccer mom and loves reading, watching movies, and entertaining family and friends. Her family attends Cornerstone Chapel.
When teaching, she loves seeing children having fun learning and hearing all the funny things children say throughout the day. Her favorite children’s book is Are You My Mother?.
Abby McMillan is our school's Administrative Coordinator and has worked with kids of different ages for around 15+ years in different capacities. She has a heart to help bring a program to the community that empowers the parents of preschoolers to raise the next generation of leaders in our industries, communities and churches! She loves working with kids because as a mom of two preschoolers, she knows that this is an important and formative stage of our kids’ lives, and she strives to help them have the best foundation possible! Her favorite kid's books are Bear Snores On and the Jesus Storybook Bible. Abby lives in Lucketts with her husband and two preschoolers.
Genna has always had a passion for children and began working at HSA as the drama teacher and classroom assistant in August 2018. She comes from a family of five kids and being right in the middle, she has had lots of practice with her younger siblings, nieces, and nephews. She also has a passion for theater and has taught several drama classes and directed plays and skits. She enjoys volunteering in children’s ministry at her church, Cornerstone Chapel, where she is currently a large group teacher for the three-year-old class. Genna is studying for her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Liberty University. When not working, Genna loves spending time with her family, shopping, and drinking coffee.
Genna loves the innocence of kids...the way they are so accepting and hold nothing back. There is never a dull moment with kids, especially preschoolers, and they somehow can always put a smile on my face.
Growing up, she loved the book Baby Dear by Esther and Eloise Wilkens. She played with baby dolls her whole childhood and thinks she related to the little girl in the book a lot, especially when her little brother was born.
Robyn is HSA's physical education coach as well as a classroom assistant. She first began working as a 4th grade teacher in 2009 and then moved on to teach K-8th grade PE from 2010-2013. After her daughter was born in 2013, she began and ran an in-home daycare for five years. Robyn started at HSA the summer of 2018 in the summer camp program. She loves spending time with her family while walking her neighborhood and exploring playgrounds!
Robyn loves working with kids because seeing children grow and progress through education and play gives her great joy. She thinks that one of the best feelings is seeing a child's "light bulb" turn on as they suddenly grasp a concept or physical movement.
Her favorite children's book is Make Way for Ducklings and favorite children's song is Five Green and Speckled Frogs.
Deisy Wilson is our 2 and 3 year old lead teacher. She has 15 years of experience, and is the kind, loving, sweet person we all want to have watching our kids! Her passion for teaching is apparent, and the kids love to join in whole heartedly as she takes them through our Abeka Curriculum.
Albe De Villiers is volunteering with us as a classroom assistant! She is from South Africa, where she studied Film Production. She has been helping us in the classrooms and has been an awesome addition to our team. Her creativity is such an addition to our classrooms and program! She is such a fun, loving, and energetic person, and we are blessed to have her!
Ana is an amazing classroom assistant at HSA. When not helping out in the classroom and playing with students, she is a freshman at NOVA. Ana is the third oldest in her family, with eight brothers and two sisters! Her previous teaching experience consists of helping her siblings with their schooling (they all were, or are being home-schooled). Ana absolutely loves working with kids because they are so spontaneous and they have so much to tell! Her favorite children's books are the Amelia Bedelia series.
